The field

What LIRA is actually like

Ciampino is Rome's business aviation airport, close to the city and much quicker on the ground than Fiumicino. It sits inside a built-up area, which is the origin of every restriction it carries.

Operating brief

What we handle before you file

Permits

ENAC is the authority and a private European flight needs nothing from it. Everything constraining about Ciampino is local, decided by the neighbourhoods under the approach rather than by Rome.

Slots and parking

Prior permission and slot coordination both apply, and the field operates under movement limits and night restrictions driven by the surrounding neighbourhoods. Confirm the current window with the desk rather than planning against a published time.

Customs and border

Non-Schengen arrivals clear at Ciampino rather than being sent to Fiumicino, which matters because the road between the two costs an hour in Rome traffic.

When it gets tight

Easter week and the papal calendar, the late-May to June shoulder, and September. Any event at the Vatican rearranges the city's ground transport more than the airport.

On the ground

Off the aircraft and into the car

Thirty to forty minutes into central Rome against Fiumicino's hour, and that gap is the whole reason to use Ciampino. Handling is quick because the field is small. Getting a slot is the hard part, not getting to the hotel.

Alternates

Where we go when LIRA will not take the trip

Every one of these is a field we would put to you with the reason attached, not a list of nearby runways.

  • LIRF

    Rome Fiumicino

No movement cap and no night restriction, at the cost of a much slower arrival experience.

  • LIRU

    Rome Urbe

General aviation, inside the city, and limited to smaller aircraft.

  • LIRQ

    Florence Peretola

Ninety minutes north by train, and often the real destination anyway.
