The field

What KOPF is actually like

Opa-locka is Miami's dedicated business aviation airport and the busiest private gateway between North America and Latin America. It handles no scheduled traffic and is built around international private movements.

Operating brief

What we handle before you file

Permits

A domestic leg needs nothing. The permit work on an Opa-locka trip almost always belongs to the leg south of it, into the Caribbean, Central or South America, and that is the half worth starting early.

Slots and parking

No slot control and generally good availability. Parking tightens around the major Miami events but rarely to the point of refusal.

Customs and border

Full customs facilities and one of the most experienced international clearance operations in United States general aviation. This is the field to use for a first point of entry from the south.

When it gets tight

Art Basel Miami Beach in early December is the sharpest week. The Miami boat show in February and the Formula One weekend in May are the other two.

On the ground

Off the aircraft and into the car

Built for international private arrivals and it shows in how quickly a Caribbean stop turns around. Miami Beach is twenty to thirty minutes; downtown is similar. This is the easiest major US border crossing on the network for a private trip.

Alternates

Where we go when KOPF will not take the trip

Every one of these is a field we would put to you with the reason attached, not a list of nearby runways.

  • KFXE

    Fort Lauderdale Executive

Twenty minutes north, business aviation focused, with its own customs facility.

  • KTMB

    Miami Executive

South west of the city, quieter, and closer to the Keys.

  • KMIA

    Miami International

Rarely the right answer for a private trip, but it has the capacity and the customs capability at any hour.
