Handling at Van Nuys (KVNY)

The field

What KVNY is actually like

Van Nuys handles more general aviation movements than almost any airport on earth, and it is the main business aviation field for the San Fernando Valley and the west side of Los Angeles. It is entirely general aviation, with several major fixed base operators on the field.

Operating brief

What we handle before you file

Permits

Domestic movements need no permit. International arrivals need eAPIS and a customs plan, and Van Nuys is not the simplest Los Angeles field for a first point of entry.

Slots and parking

No slots. The constraint is the noise abatement programme, which includes a voluntary curfew and departure procedures that are taken seriously by the airport and the surrounding community alike.

Customs and border

Customs is available but arranged rather than assumed. For a first arrival into the United States, clearing at a larger field and repositioning is frequently the cleaner plan.

When it gets tight

Awards season from January into March, and the run of industry events through the year. Los Angeles ground transport is more often the limiting factor than the apron.

On the ground

Off the aircraft and into the car

Several major FBOs and a ramp that runs at volume all day. Los Angeles traffic makes every drive time a guess rather than a number, so plan against the worst case and be pleasantly surprised. Burbank is closer to the studios if that is where the trip is going.

Alternates

Where we go when KVNY will not take the trip

Every one of these is a field we would put to you with the reason attached, not a list of nearby runways.

  • KBUR

    Hollywood Burbank

Scheduled traffic alongside business aviation, closer to the studios, with a full customs facility.

  • KLGB

    Long Beach

South of the city, capable and rarely constrained.

  • KSMO

    Santa Monica

Closest to the coast but on a shortened runway and scheduled for closure, so confirm before planning around it.
