The field

What MDPC is actually like

Punta Cana is the Dominican Republic's busiest airport and one of the largest privately owned airports in the world. It is heavily leisure-driven and handles a substantial volume of business aviation into the eastern resorts.

Operating brief

What we handle before you file

Permits

The Dominican IDAC issues permits for foreign operators and the process is quick by regional standards, with Caribbean permits generally moving faster than their African or Asian equivalents. The airport is privately owned and run, which shows in how commercially it treats private traffic: things get arranged because someone wants the business, not because a procedure allows it.

Slots and parking

No formal slot control. Parking is the constraint over the holidays and it fills genuinely early, so overnight space at Christmas needs arranging weeks out.

Customs and border

Entry requirements are light for most nationalities and the field is well practised at private arrivals. One of the easier borders on the network.

When it gets tight

Christmas and New Year, followed by the winter season from January through April and the North American spring break in March. Hurricane season from June through November is a schedule risk.

On the ground

Off the aircraft and into the car

Most of the eastern resorts are under half an hour, and the airport is privately run in a way that shows in the arrival experience. Handling is quick and well practised at private traffic. One of the easier stops in the Caribbean.

Alternates

Where we go when MDPC will not take the trip

Every one of these is a field we would put to you with the reason attached, not a list of nearby runways.

  • MDLR

    La Romana

West along the coast, quieter, and closer to Casa de Campo.

  • MDSD

    Santo Domingo Las Américas

The capital, with full facilities and capacity over the holidays.

  • MDST

    Santiago Cibao

The interior, uncongested, and a practical parking base.
